Installment Loans in Ohio

Ohio installment lending is not one legal product. For the current PLS Cash Advance range up to $5,000, the page distinguishes the Small Loan Law from the General Loan Law so visitors looking for a larger multi-payment loan are not forced into the $1,000 Short-Term Loan Law product.

Choose a loan type by amount

PLS Cash Advance currently presents request amounts from $200 to $5,000. The ranges below are navigation guidance between our state loan guides — not statutory limits, eligibility rules, or a promise of approval.

$200–$1,000

Payday Loans in Ohio

Preferred routing for Ohio Short-Term Loan Law requests. The statutory maximum loan amount is $1,000 and the product is repaid in installments rather than a traditional single-payment payday structure.

Installment Loans in Ohio

Preferred routing for larger multi-payment requests. Ohio has more than one consumer installment-loan regime; the page distinguishes the Small Loan Law and General Loan Law instead of treating them as one product.

Amount and term limits

Ohio does not have one single “installment loan” statute. Within the current PLS Cash Advance $1,000–$5,000 routing range, relevant licensed lending can include the Small Loan Law and the General Loan Law, each with different rate, fee and term rules.

Term rules depend on the legal regime. A Small Loan Law licensee may not make a loan of $1,000 or less or a loan with a duration of one year or less. General Loan Law loans do not use that same Small Loan Law threshold; precomputed General Loan Law loans are repaid in monthly installments.

Interest, fees and repayment

Because more than one legal regime can cover a consumer installment loan and each permits different charges, there is no single statewide maximum-cost formula for every Ohio installment loan in the $1,000–$5,000 range.

The Small Loan Law uses 28% on the first $1,000 of unpaid principal and 22% on the portion above $1,000, with an alternative APR method capped at 25%. The General Loan Law generally permits up to 21% annual interest, with an alternative APR method capped at 25%, plus specifically authorized charges.

Small Loan Law precomputed loans are repayable in substantially equal consecutive monthly installments, subject to statutory exceptions. General Loan Law precomputed loans are repayable in monthly installments, with the first installment period allowed to be extended by up to 15 days.

Rollovers, refinancing and early payment

Rollover allowed?
Not reduced to a yes/no rule
“Rollover” is not a useful single yes/no field for these installment regimes. Renewal, refinancing and deferment are governed by the applicable Chapter 1321 provisions and contract structure.
Prepayment penalty allowed?
Not reduced to a yes/no rule
Ohio’s Small Loan Law permits payment in advance and requires refunds or credits of unearned interest for qualifying early payoff of precomputed loans. The General Loan Law also requires refunds or credits of unearned interest on qualifying early payoff of precomputed loans. Because the regimes differ, this page does not reduce all Ohio installment loans to one prepayment-penalty flag.

Ohio borrower protections

  • Small Loan Law and General Loan Law lenders are regulated by the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions, subject to statutory exemptions for certain institutions and products.
  • Small Loan Law precomputed loans require substantially equal consecutive monthly installments, and General Loan Law precomputed loans require monthly installments.
  • Both regimes restrict the interest and additional charges that a licensed or registered lender may collect.
  • Consumers can verify Ohio consumer-finance credentials through the Division of Financial Institutions eLicense lookup.

Ohio loan cost calculator

Why there is no single statutory calculator: Ohio installment lending in the PLS Cash Advance $1,000–$5,000 range can fall under more than one Chapter 1321 regime. The Small Loan Law and General Loan Law use different interest and fee structures, so one calculator would risk applying the wrong statutory framework to a visitor’s loan.
