Installment Loans in South Carolina

South Carolina provides regulated multi-payment consumer-loan routes through Title 37 and, for covered consumer-finance companies, Title 34 Chapter 29. The current $550–$5,000 selector fits these regimes, but pricing depends on the lender and statutory path rather than one universal rate formula.

Amount and term limits

Title 34 Chapter 29 covers licensed consumer-finance cash advances up to $7,500. Title 37 defines a broader consumer-loan framework; the current PLS Cash Advance $550–$5,000 route fits within the relevant regulated regimes.

For Chapter 29 loans, substantially equal monthly installments are required and maximum maturity rises by cash advance: 24.5 months at $1,000 or less, 36.5 months at $1,001–$1,500, 48.5 months at $1,501–$2,000, and 60.5 months at $2,001–$7,500. Other Title 37 supervised-loan structures can differ.

Interest, fees and repayment

South Carolina does not have one universal APR formula for every non-depository installment loan. The applicable ceiling depends on whether the loan is a Chapter 29 restricted loan, another Title 37 supervised loan, or a supervised-financial-organization loan.

Chapter 29 uses amount-based finance-charge schedules plus capped initial charges. Title 37 supervised loans above $600 may use a maximum rate properly filed and posted under §37-3-305, or an 18% annual-rate alternative.

Chapter 29 loans use substantially equal consecutive monthly installments. Title 37 also imposes repayment requirements on specific supervised-loan categories.

No
Title 37 §37-3-209 allows a debtor to prepay a consumer loan in full at any time without penalty, subject to statutory rebate rules. Chapter 29 also requires refund or credit of unearned charges when a covered loan is prepaid.

South Carolina borrower protections

  • Consumer finance companies and supervised lenders are licensed and examined by the South Carolina Consumer Finance Division.
  • Chapter 29 loans have amount-based finance-charge and maximum-term rules.
  • Title 37 requires supervised lenders to comply with filed/posted maximum-rate schedules or another applicable statutory ceiling.
  • Consumers may prepay covered consumer loans in full without penalty, with statutory rebate rules for unearned charges.

South Carolina loan cost calculator

Why there is no single statutory calculator: South Carolina uses multiple lawful pricing regimes, including Chapter 29 charge schedules and lender-filed Title 37 maximum rates. A single calculator would imply a universal statewide APR that does not exist.
